Alessi ASPN Piana Chair
The “PIANA” folding chair has been designed for Alessi by David Chipperfield and is produced by Lamm in San Secondo (Parma). It is made of polypropylene reinforced with fibreglass, is 100% recyclable, suitable for the outdoors, made in Italy, measures 7 cm when folded and is available in a wide range of colours. These are the technical/functional characteristics. From a creative point of view, I consider it a masterstroke in the most difficult area for designers: a type of product that many artists have tried their hand at throughout history but with so few excellent results. The revelation in this design has much to do with geometric abstraction and the search for great formal simplicity: rigour and precision as the typical qualities of the poetics of David Chipperfield.

David Chipperfield
Nationality: United Kingdom
Chipperfield was born in London in 1953, and graduated in 1976 from Kingston School of Art in London. He studied architecture at the Architectural Association (AA) in London, receiving his diploma in architecture in 1977. He worked in the offices of several notable architects, including Douglas Stephen, Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, before founding his own firm, David Chipperfield Architects, in 1985. As a young architect Chipperfield championed the historically-attuned, place-specific work of continental architects such as Moneo, Snozzi and Siza through the 9H Gallery situated in the front room of his London office.
