The Kaari Table, the result of Artek’s first collaboration with French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, has a light, fluid outline that could have been drawn with a single stroke of the pen. Supported by a single central pillar, the table owes its stability to the simple yet elegant steel band that fans out in four wings around its base – “Kaari” means “arch” in Finnish. The pillar is made of oak, and the table top is available in a variety of finishes. Strikingly contemporary, Kaari tables promise stability, longevity, and adaptability and are suitable for both home and public spheres.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec

Ronan - France, 1971 / Erwan - France, 1976

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s working collaboration is a permanent dialogue nourished by their distinct personalities and a shared notion of diligence with the intention to reach more balance and fineness.

In 1997, they presented their Disintegrated Kitchen at the Salon du Meuble in Paris and were spotted by Giulio Cappellini, who gave them their first industrial design projects, notably the Lit clos (“Closed Bed”) and the Spring Chair. A meeting with Vitra’s Rolf Fehlbaum resulted in their conception of a new kind of office system, Joyn, in 2002. This was the beginning of a special partnership that has borne fruit in numerous projects, including Algues, the Alcove Sofa, the Worknest, the Slow Chair, the Vegetal and L’Oiseau. Since 2004, the Bouroullecs have also been working with Magis, for whom they have designed two complete furniture collections, Striped and Steelwood as well as additional projects such as the Pila chair, the Pilo table, the Central and Tambour tables.

In 2010, they debuted a new collection of tableware for Alessi. Since 2011, they have designed the Piani and Aim lamps for Flos, the Losanges rug for Nani Marquina, the Osso chair for Mattiazzi.

Today Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec design for numerous manufacturers, Vitra, Kvadrat, Magis, Kartell, Alessi, Mattiazzi, Flos, and more recently, Iittala.

Artek was founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was "to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means." That was the beginning of Artek.

The Artek collection comprises design furniture and lighting fixtures by the Nordic masters Alvar Aalto, Ilmari Tapiovaara, and Eero Aarnio. In addition to classics, Artek is also launching new generation design products under the Artek Studio brand. Alvar Aalto's furniture represents an interpretation of Scandinavian modernism articulated primarily in Finnish birch wood. Wood and functionality are both hallmarks of the Artek collection. The Artek portfolio represents the most comprehensive collection of wooden design furniture in the world.

Artek has international sales offices in New York, Berlin, Stockholm and Tokyo. The domestic market accounts for 60% of the company's turnover, with Artek holding a solid position in the Finnish consumer and contract market. Vitra's design classics have for a number of years been an important part of Artek's collection for the Finnish market. Artek operates four stores in Finland, as well as a wide retail network.
