Going through the impeccable furniture sketches of mid century architect Ralph Rapson could possibly be one of the best ways to spend a cold winter afternoon in Minnesota. We found his Cave Chair illustration and immediately thought it would be a great collaboration piece that fit the Loll aesthetic. Ralph originally conceived this chair in 1943 as plywood with a cushion, but it was never actually produced. Perfectly over-sized, futuristic, comfortable, and fun, the Cave Chair will induce hours of conversation whether you’re sitting in it or just walking by. Named after the earth-excavated Cave House that Ralph designed with Dave Runnells in 1939, it too was never built.

Ralph Rapson

USA, 1914

Ralph Rapson was part of an exhilarating era in American Modernist architecture and design. He began his formal architectural training in the early 1930s at the University of Michigan and then attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art, led by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen.

At age thirty-one he participated in Arts and Architecture magazine’s Case Study program for postwar housing. Rapson’s “Greenbelt House” entry drew wide and favorable critical attention. With his renowned drawing skills he produced hundreds of furniture designs including his own successful line for K G. Knoll Associates in the 1940s.

Ralph Rapson's accomplishments in architecture and design span 70 years and connect the defining events and personalities of American Modernism. His furniture is in the collections of major modern art and design museums. His buildings are coveted for their masterful use of space, light, and line.

Loll Designs came into being in 1997 when a Minnesota-based municipal skate park designer/builder, TrueRide, designed, built, and installed more than 450 custom skateboard parks in cities across the U.S. and abroad. TrueRide’s founders, fueled by an inherent concern for the environment, led them to seek a use for the recyclable materials in their skate park projects. In 2003 Loll Designs was conceived as a way to repurpose excess skate ramp material into outdoor furniture. The iconic Adirondack chair was a natural place to start and it was launched in 2006.

With a focus on modern design and doing the right thing, Loll Designs forged ahead creating hundreds of products. Unique recycled materials and sustainable business practices all coalesce to make innovative, functional, and thoughtful products made in the USA and distributed worldwide.
