Flensted HCA Cut Millman Mobile
Among the paper cutouts left by Hans Christian Andersen were several depicting the so-called ”Mill-Man”. This is one of them.
Referring to it in 1924, the late Professor Hans Brix, Ph.D., wrote in his foreword to the “Hans Christian Andersen’s Paper-cuttings”.
Before yonder strange Mill-man whose four arms are the outstreched mill wings; whose stomach opens to a port to which the mill stepladder leads; whose breast contains two hearts; and above the whole of this timbered scaffolding of a body rises a living face, reminiscent of that of an old peasant, smiling and sensitive.
Does this not embody the idea of the Mill, the singularity between buildings created by man, artificially constructed, yet characterized by a close union with the essentialities for the simple life itself.
As a silhouette cutter Hans Christian Andersen is the life of the party. He was the celebrated guest of the gentry and the city intellectuals.
When travelling Hans Christian Andersen always brought his 24 cm (10 inch) long pair of scissors and he amused himself and others by cutting silhouettes.

Mobiles are a traditional craft in Denmark, but the modern mobile - as a decoration for the home - was created in 1953 by Christian Flensted and his wife Grethe to celebrate the birth of their first daughter. Their first design, the stork mobile, was a great success, and now flies all over the world. Christian Flensted became known as the "Uromager", a name impossible to translate into English, which means a "maker of mischievous things that are always on the move". Flensted Mobiles are designed that the elements are in constant motion while the entire mobile maintains a harmonic balance.
This item qualifies for free door-to-door delivery within Canada, with a few exceptions:
- Orders $150 or less are charged a $35 small order fee at checkout.
- Additional charges apply for Remote Delivery Areas including the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and other remote locations outside of major city centres.
- Small items will be delivered by FedEx or other courier service in your area.
- Large items will be delivered by freight service. This is standard curbside delivery; meaning the driver will not haul up an incline or up stairs, and it will be your responsibility to bring the item inside, complete any assembly, and remove packaging debris.
